DOES TURKESTERONE WORK? 6 CRITICAL RESEARCH FACTS

Turkesterone is sold as a natural muscle builder, sometimes called a plant steroid without the side effects. So does turkesterone work? Here is the short answer. There is no long term trial of turkesterone for muscle in people. The closest relative, ecdysterone, has mixed results. And lab tests found that many capsules hold far less than the label says.

This guide explains what turkesterone is, what the cell, animal and human studies found, what is really inside the capsules, and what we know about side effects and drug testing. Every study figure comes from a PubMed abstract listed at the end. We do not sell supplements. For supplements with stronger evidence, see evidence based supplements.

Turkesterone in brief

Three numbers sum up the evidence on turkesterone. How many long term trials tested it in people, how much was in one tested product, and the size of the one positive trial.

0long trials

Long term trials of turkesterone for muscle in people

The only human study of turkesterone gave single doses to 11 men and followed them for 24 hours. It found no clear change in IGF-1 or metabolism (PMID 40757520).

<1%of label

Ecdysterone found in a tested product, against its label claim

A 2025 trial checked the capsules it used. They held less than 1 percent of the claimed ecdysterone, and the group taking them did no better than placebo (PMID 40781783).

46men

People in the one trial where an ecdysteroid added muscle

In 2019, 46 young men trained for 10 weeks. Those given ecdysterone gained more muscle and bench press strength (PMID 31123801). Another trial of 45 men found no difference (PMID 18500969).

Study figures on this page come from PubMed abstracts listed at the end. Drug testing facts come from WADA and the US military OPSS program, linked in the text. Where we give a rule of thumb, we say so.

What is turkesterone, and is turkesterone a steroid?

Turkesterone is a natural compound found in a plant called Ajuga turkestanica, which grows in Central Asia. It belongs to a family called ecdysteroids. Insects use similar compounds as moulting hormones. Plants such as spinach and quinoa also contain small amounts of ecdysteroids (PMID 38732627).

So is turkesterone a steroid? In chemistry, yes: it has the same four ring shape as all steroids. But it is not an anabolic steroid like testosterone. Ecdysteroids do not bind to the classic steroid receptors inside cells (PMID 18220764). Lab work suggests ecdysterone works through a different switch, the estrogen receptor beta (PMID 24974955).

This matters for two reasons. First, turkesterone does not act like testosterone, so it should not shut down your own hormone production the way steroids do. Second, a different mechanism does not prove it works. It only means the question is still open.

YouWhat this means for you. Turkesterone is a plant compound, not a drug like testosterone. It is sold as a dietary supplement. Calling it natural does not tell you whether it builds muscle. Only trials in people can answer that.

What turkesterone does in cells and animals

Most claimed turkesterone benefits come from lab and animal studies, and some of them are striking.

In muscle cells grown in a dish, ecdysteroids raised protein building by up to 20 percent. In rats, they increased grip strength (PMID 18444661). In another rat study, ecdysterone grew muscle fibres more than the same dose of the steroid Dianabol (PMID 26060342). That study is the source of most "stronger than steroids" claims you see online.

Not every animal study agrees. Old mice got an Ajuga turkestanica extract or pure ecdysterone for 28 days. They showed no change in muscle size, fibre size or protein building signals (PMID 33418916).

Cell and rat results often fail to carry over to people. Doses per kilogram in rats can be far higher than what a capsule gives you. That is why the human trials below matter more.

20%The rise in protein building that ecdysteroids caused in muscle cells grown in a dish (PMID 18444661). Not a human result.
YouWhat this means for you. When an ad says turkesterone beat steroids, it is usually quoting a rat study of ecdysterone, not a human trial of turkesterone. Treat it as a reason to study it, not as proof.

Does turkesterone work in humans? The published trials

We searched PubMed for every controlled trial of turkesterone or ecdysterone in people. The chart shows what we found: five trials, only one of them on turkesterone itself.

Turkesterone, 2024. Eleven young men took turkesterone or a placebo. Blood and metabolism were checked before, 3 hours after and 24 hours after. There was no significant change in IGF-1, metabolic rate, fat burning or blood sugar. IGF-1 rose a little but not enough to be sure it was real (PMID 40757520).

Ecdysterone, 2019. Forty six young men trained for 10 weeks. Those given ecdysterone gained more muscle and more bench press strength than the others. Liver and kidney markers did not rise (PMID 31123801). The authors even suggested ecdysterone should be banned in sport.

Ecdysterone, 2006. Forty five trained men took 200 mg of ecdysterone a day or a placebo for 8 weeks. There was no difference in muscle, fat, strength or hormones (PMID 18500969).

Ecdysterone product, 2025. Twenty eight trained men took a store bought ecdysterone product or a placebo for 12 weeks. Both groups got stronger and bigger from training, with no extra gain from the product. Lab tests showed the capsules held under 1 percent of the claimed ecdysterone (PMID 40781783).

Ecdysterone and fat, 2025. Twenty men took 30 mg a day of ecdysterone from asparagus, or a placebo, for 12 weeks of training. The ecdysterone group lost more arm fat and burned more fat during exercise (PMID 41485968). This trial did not report a muscle gain.

YouWhat this means for you. So does turkesterone work? Nobody has shown it in people yet. Its cousin ecdysterone helped in one trial and did nothing in two others. That is not enough to spend money on, unless you accept that you are paying for an experiment.

What lab testing found inside the capsules

Even if turkesterone worked, it would only help if the capsule held what the label claims. Several lab studies suggest you cannot count on that.

A 2026 study tested 13 supplements sold as ecdysterone or plant extracts like Ajuga turkestanica. Several products sold as 80 to 95 percent ecdysterone held far less than declared. Measured amounts ranged from too little to detect up to about 50 mg per capsule. Turkesterone content also varied between products sold as standardised extracts (PMID 41976134).

The 2025 training trial above is the clearest warning. The product held under 1 percent of the claimed ecdysterone and about 10 percent of a second claimed ingredient. In muscle cells, it had no effect at all (PMID 40781783).

<1%Ecdysterone found in a tested product, against the amount on its label (PMID 40781783).

The US military supplement safety program warns the same thing. It says ecdysterone or turkesterone content can vary from batch to batch and differ from the label (OPSS, June 2026).

Turkesterone capsules: six opened supplement capsules in a row on a dark surface, each with a pile of powder in front that is a different size, from a large heap to a few grains
Lab tests of ecdysteroid supplements found many held far less than the label said.
YouWhat this means for you. If you still want to try turkesterone, choose a product that publishes a lab report for your batch number. A label that says "10 percent turkesterone" is a claim, not a measurement.

Turkesterone before and after: what the photos cannot show

Search for turkesterone before and after and you will find dramatic photos. They cannot tell you whether turkesterone did anything.

The 2025 trial shows why. Both groups trained three times a week for 12 weeks. Both got stronger and both built muscle. The placebo group improved as much as the product group (PMID 40781783). A before and after photo of either group would have looked like a success.

Photos also mix in better diet, more sleep, a new program, a tan, a pump and better lighting. None of that is turkesterone.

For comparison, here is what a well studied supplement does. Across 49 trials, protein supplements added about 0.3 kg of fat free mass on top of training (PMID 28698222). Even a proven supplement makes a small change that you would barely see in a photo.

Turkesterone supplement: an unlabelled dark bottle with a few capsules spilled on a gym bench next to an open training log and a pen, red accent light
Training, food and sleep make the big changes. A supplement adds, at best, a small one.
YouWhat this means for you. Judge a supplement by controlled trials, not by photos. If you train hard and eat enough protein, you will see progress with or without turkesterone. More on that in dietary fats and hormones.

Ecdysterone vs turkesterone

Ecdysterone, also called 20 hydroxyecdysone, and turkesterone are close relatives in the same family. Ecdysterone is found in spinach, quinoa and a plant called Rhaponticum. Turkesterone comes mainly from Ajuga turkestanica (PMID 38732627).

Sellers often claim turkesterone is stronger than ecdysterone. We found no human study comparing them. That claim comes from marketing, not from trials.

YouWhat this means for you. If you want the ecdysteroid with the most human data, that is ecdysterone, and even its data are mixed. Turkesterone has less evidence, not more.

Turkesterone side effects, tongkat ali and drug testing

Side effects. In the short studies, ecdysteroids looked well tolerated. The 10 week ecdysterone trial found no rise in liver or kidney markers (PMID 31123801). The turkesterone study reported good stomach and blood pressure tolerance after single doses (PMID 40757520). But no study has followed people taking turkesterone for months or years, so long term safety is unknown.

One 2026 case report described severe muscle breakdown in a young man after a training session of over 4 hours. He was taking several supplements, including ecdysterone. The authors could not say which factor caused it (PMID 41952948). A single case does not prove a risk, but it is a reason not to stack many products.

Tongkat ali. Turkesterone is often sold with tongkat ali. A review of trials found tongkat ali raised total testosterone in men, especially in men with low levels (PMID 36013514). We found no trial of turkesterone and tongkat ali together. Fadogia agrestis, another booster often sold with it, is covered in fadogia agrestis.

Drug testing. Ecdysterone has been on the WADA Monitoring Program since 2020. That list tracks substances that are not banned, to look for misuse (WADA, OPSS). The US military does not prohibit ecdysterone or turkesterone, but warns that some products add other ingredients that are on its banned list (OPSS).

YouWhat this means for you. Talk to your doctor first if you take medicines, have liver or kidney problems, are pregnant or are under 18. If you are a tested athlete, check with your sport body before you take any ecdysteroid product.

Six critical research facts about turkesterone

1. It is a plant ecdysteroid, not an anabolic steroid. It does not bind the classic steroid receptors (PMID 18220764).

2. The exciting results come from cells and rats. Ecdysterone beat Dianabol in a rat study (PMID 26060342), but old mice showed no effect (PMID 33418916).

3. Turkesterone has no long term human trial. The only study gave single doses to 11 men (PMID 40757520).

4. Ecdysterone results in people are mixed. One trial found more muscle (PMID 31123801); two found no extra gain (PMID 18500969, PMID 40781783).

5. Many capsules hold less than the label. One product held under 1 percent of its claimed ecdysterone (PMID 40781783).

6. Ecdysterone is watched in sport. It has been on the WADA Monitoring Program since 2020 (WADA).

YouWhat this means for you. Put your money into what is proven first: enough protein, creatine monohydrate and a good training plan. Evidence based supplements lists them.

So, does turkesterone work?

Not as far as anyone has shown in people. Turkesterone has one short human study with no clear effect (PMID 40757520). Its relative ecdysterone helped in one trial of 46 men (PMID 31123801) and did nothing in two others (PMID 18500969, PMID 40781783).

On top of that, products often hold far less than they claim (PMID 41976134). So even a real effect could be lost in the bottle.

1 of 5Human ecdysteroid trials that found a muscle benefit (PMID 31123801). None of them tested turkesterone over weeks.

Our take: turkesterone is an open research question, not a proven muscle builder. If a long, well run trial of a tested product shows a benefit, we will update this page. Until then, the basics will do far more for you. More guides sit on the supplements hub.

Turkesterone: frequently asked questions

Does turkesterone work?

It has not been shown to build muscle in people. The only human study gave single doses to 11 men and found no clear change in IGF-1 or metabolism (PMID 40757520). Its relative ecdysterone helped in one 10 week trial (PMID 31123801) but not in two others (PMID 18500969, PMID 40781783).

Is turkesterone a steroid?

Chemically it is a plant steroid, called an ecdysteroid. It is not an anabolic steroid like testosterone. Ecdysteroids do not bind the classic steroid receptors (PMID 18220764). Lab work points to the estrogen receptor beta instead (PMID 24974955).

What are the side effects of turkesterone?

Short studies found no rise in liver or kidney markers with ecdysterone (PMID 31123801), and single doses of turkesterone were well tolerated (PMID 40757520). Long term safety has not been studied, so it is unknown.

What does turkesterone do in the body?

In muscle cells, ecdysteroids raised protein building by up to 20 percent (PMID 18444661). In people, single doses of turkesterone caused no clear change in IGF-1 or metabolic rate over 24 hours (PMID 40757520).

Ecdysterone vs turkesterone: which is better?

No study has compared them in people. Ecdysterone has more human data, with one positive trial (PMID 31123801) and two with no extra benefit (PMID 18500969, PMID 40781783). Turkesterone has only one short study (PMID 40757520).

Does turkesterone raise testosterone?

Not in the studies we found. Ecdysterone did not change testosterone in 45 trained men over 8 weeks (PMID 18500969). Tongkat ali, often sold with it, raised total testosterone in a review of trials (PMID 36013514).

Will turkesterone make me fail a drug test?

Ecdysterone is not banned by WADA, but it has been on the WADA Monitoring Program since 2020. Some products also contain other ingredients that are banned. Tested athletes should check with their sport body first.

Is turkesterone safe to buy?

Product quality is a real problem. In a 2026 lab study, several ecdysteroid supplements held far less than the label claimed (PMID 41976134). One product in a 2025 trial held under 1 percent of its claimed ecdysterone (PMID 40781783).
