What Is the Wilks Score?

The wilks calculator produces a score that adjusts your raw total for body weight, allowing fair strength comparisons between lifters of different sizes. Without normalisation, a 140 kg lifter will almost always out-total an 83 kg lifter in absolute terms — even if the lighter lifter is relatively stronger. The Wilks Score removes that bias.

The formula was created by Robert Wilks and adopted by the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) for best-lifter awards from the late 1990s until 2018. It uses a 5th-degree polynomial regression fitted to competition data across all weight classes and both sexes. The core equation is:

Vanderburgh and Batterham (1999) validated the Wilks formula against other normalisation methods and confirmed it produces reliable cross-class comparisons for competitive powerlifters. It remains the most commonly cited score in powerlifting communities despite being replaced in IPF competition by newer formulas.

What Is the DOTS Score?

DOTS (Dynamic Objective Team Scoring) is the bodyweight-normalisation formula developed in 2019 by Tim Konertz for the German Powerlifting Federation. It uses a 4th-degree polynomial fitted against raw competition data from 2010 to 2018. The reduction in polynomial degree reduces sensitivity to extreme body weights — one of the main criticisms of the original Wilks formula.

DOTS is now the default formula on OpenPowerlifting.org and is used for best-lifter awards across numerous independent raw federations. IPF-affiliated federations use IPF GL Points, not DOTS. The core equation is:

Because DOTS uses the same 500-point scaling factor as Wilks, the tier classifications are directly comparable: a DOTS score of 400 represents the same relative achievement level as a Wilks score of 400.

5 Wilks and DOTS Strength Tiers Explained

Both formulas use the same tier structure because they share the same 500-point scaling baseline. The score thresholds below apply to the three-lift total. Partial totals will produce lower absolute scores that do not map cleanly to these tiers.

Below 200

Beginner

Early stage of strength training. Total is below competitive entry level. Focus should be on progressive overload fundamentals and technique development across all three lifts.

200 – 299

Intermediate

Recreational lifter with consistent training history. Competitive at open entry-level meets. Strength is meaningful relative to body weight but has not yet reached regional competitive standards.

300 – 399

Advanced

Competitive at local and regional meets. Represents approximately the top 10–15% of trained powerlifters. Total is genuinely strong relative to body weight across all classes.

400 – 499

Elite

National-level competition performance. Achieved by a small fraction of competitive powerlifters. Represents a high degree of sport-specific development and consistency.

500+: World Class. International medal contention. Scores above 500 are achieved by the top competitors globally and typically require many years of elite-level programming and competition experience.

Both formulas answer the same question — how strong is this lifter relative to their body weight — but differ in the dataset and polynomial degree used to build the normalisation curve.

For raw lifters comparing scores after 2019, DOTS is the more appropriate standard. Wilks remains relevant for historical record comparison and non-IPF federations.

Ferland et al. (2020) compared the efficiency of Wilks and IPF GL Points at normalising strength across body weights using the Open Powerlifting database. Their analysis confirmed that newer formulas show improved statistical fit at extreme weight classes, supporting the shift toward DOTS for raw powerlifting.

As a natural lifter progresses, body weight and total both tend to increase. The wilks calculator helps you determine whether total strength is increasing faster than body weight — the hallmark of genuine strength development. A rising Wilks Score confirms that progressive overload is producing real adaptation, not just mass gain. Managing training volume correctly is the primary driver of long-term score improvement.

Benchmarking Against Competitive Standards

A score of 300 puts you in the advanced tier — competitive at regional meets but below national standard in most federations. A score of 400 would place you in or near the top at national events in many weight classes. Understanding what builds muscle and applying it consistently over years is what separates the 300 tier from the 400 tier.

Raw vs equipped: Both Wilks and DOTS coefficients were derived from raw lifting data. If you use a squat suit, bench shirt, or deadlift suit, your total will be inflated relative to the polynomial baseline and your score will overstate your relative raw strength. Limitations

3 Limitations of Wilks and DOTS Scores

Limitation 1

Dataset Age for Wilks

The original Wilks coefficients were derived from single-ply competition data from the early 1990s. Raw powerlifting performance norms have shifted significantly since then, meaning the formula may not perfectly reflect modern raw competitive standards at extreme weight classes.

Limitation 2

Sex-Based Norms Are Independent

Male and female Wilks and DOTS scores use separate polynomial curves. A male score of 350 and a female score of 350 reflect different levels of achievement relative to their respective competitive populations. The formulas do not produce truly cross-sex comparable outputs.

Limitation 3

Not Lift-Specific

Wilks and DOTS normalise the three-lift total, not individual lifts. A lifter with an unusually weak bench press but very strong squat and deadlift scores identically to a balanced lifter at the same total. Individual lift weaknesses are invisible to either formula.
